Training and Development

At VH Pallot and Sons, we are committed to ensuring that we operate to the best Health and Safety and environmental practices. Therefore, we place high importance on making sure that all staff are fully trained and competent.

However, staff need not necessarily be fully trained when they join the firm. Of importance, is their attitude to work, the customers and their potential to develop and provide a quality and safe service. This is assessed by John Pallot during the job interview stage and during a mandatory 1-week probationary period.

Staff that demonstrate they have the required attributes then continue to further training. VH Pallot organises and pays for them to obtain all relevant qualifications (for example NPTC). This helps ensure that staff can progress within the firm and operate to the best standard.

New members of staff are usually employed as groundsmen. Once the staff member has completed the relevant NPTC certificates, he is assessed and, if deemed appropriate, given more responsibility (for example to work with chainsaws, hedge trimmers etc.).

The training and qualifications provided by us are extensive. They include:

  • NPTC certificates covering all aspects of tree surgery
  • NPTC course for hedge trimming
  • Course on safety using access platforms
  • NPTC certificates in pesticide spraying (States of Jersey course)
  • NPTC certificates in chainsaw maintenance and aerial rescue (covering procedures should a climber have to be rescued).

All grounds staff have certificates to use chainsaws.

All staff have attended first aid courses.

The formal training is also complimented by ‘on the job training’.  John works closely with all staff and as such, is constantly appraising and assessing their work to ensure that it is delivered to the best possible standard.

John regularly gives positive feedback, giving credit to his staff members when credit is due.
